ABACUS is a great resource for families looking for private ABA providers. It can seem overwhelming when you are trying to sort through all the services available in your region, so having one central location to search and contact providers can be very helpful. I have had parents contact me through ABACUS, and I have contacted providers in search of instructor therapists to connect with families I work with.
If you are a provider and have not listed your services on ABACUS, I highly recommend you do. ABA is a constantly changing field. With the recent increasing demand in service, it is important for families be aware of all their options. ABACUS is here to connect families with quality service providers in a timely manner. No child should have to wait for service if there are enough available providers in their area.
Autism Ontario has done a great job creating and maintaining this resource. It is our job as providers to support it and do our best to ensure it continues to function in the way it was intended to. We can also spread the word and encourage families and other providers to make use of this useful resource.

When parents receive a diagnosis of autism, or otherwise determine that behavioural or early interventions services are needed to help their child thrive, they face a lot of uncertainty.
Though the community is becoming increasingly connected, through the efforts of online public forums and outreach organizations, the journey to clarity, understanding and confidence in the choices being made is a long one. When parents find out about the ABACUS list, they are one step closer to feeling empowered; finally, they know where to begin their journey.
As a provider listed on ABACUS, I appreciate the all-in-one service it provides with respect to navigating the myriad of service options available for families. I appreciate the way it concisely lists provider credentials and competencies and gives parents tools and knowledge to navigate the waters of early intervention, while feeling empowered rather than overwhelmed.
When parents contact me through ABACUS, I find they are open to an honest discussion about the needs of their children; they are open to the various pathways to child development, and they are equipped with the important questions that all service providers should be able to answer openly and honestly. ABACUS provides a starting point for parents in which information is unbiased and resources are clearly outlined.
When parents find a place to have questions answered, from the most basic to the most complex, they feel increasingly supported, valued and acknowledged; as a mental health provider, I truly appreciate the importance of these feelings on the journey to empowerment.
